What are cavities?
Cavities, or tooth decay, occur when bacteria in the mouth convert sugar into acid that breaks down tooth enamel. It is one of the world's most common diseases, but fortunately it can be prevented.
7 tips to prevent cavities
1. Brush your teeth twice daily
Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes and make sure to reach all tooth surfaces.
2. Use dental floss every day
Dental floss reaches between teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach. This is where cavities often start.
3. Limit sugar intake
Sugar is bacteria's favorite. The more often you eat sugar, the more acid is produced.
4. Drink water
Water helps rinse away food residue and neutralize acids in the mouth.
5. Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which is the body's natural defense against cavities.
6. Come for regular check-ups
Regular visits to the dentist allow us to detect cavities early, before they become a bigger problem.
7. Consider fluoride treatment
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks.
